Low-Vision Rehab

The Low Vision Rehabilitation Program at Deaconess HomeCare utilizes a multidisciplinary approach to the rehabilitation of patients dealing with limitations that result from bilateral vision impairments such as macular degeneration, glaucoma, cataracts and the effects on vision by diabetes.

The evaluation includes: visual acuity testing, contrast sensitivity assessment, the effect of glare, color perception, visual field assessment and activities of daily living (ADLs). Occupational therapists (OTs) provide skilled training to obtain/maintain independence in the home.

Interventions:

  • Teach disease process
  • Dietary consultation
  • Medication management
  • Teach visual exercises for the effective use of remaining vision
  • Teach compensatory techniques for ADLs (Activities of Daily Living)
  • Perform home modifications to increase safety, efficiency and independence
  • Evaluate for and educate in the use of adaptive equipment
  • Identify community, state and national support resources
