At the time of a life-limiting illness, hospice may be a caring option. The hospice philosophy recognizes the importance of quality of life for the patient, and their family and caregivers. Hospice does not hasten or postpone death and treats the person rather than the disease; it highlights quality rather than length of life. It provides family-centered care involving the patient and family in making decisions.

Hospice services are covered by Medicare, most Medicaid and some private insurances.

Hospice Services include:

• Registered Nurses – A nurse is always available who can answer questions, provide reassurance over the telephone or make a visit to help with unexpected problems or emergencies.
• Social Work and Counseling – Licensed social workers, who are specially trained to work with hospice patients, help with financial and other burdens, counseling both patients and their families.
• Hospice Aides – Trained staff offers assistance with personal care.
• Pastoral Counseling – Spiritual support is offered for both the patient and their caregivers.
• Volunteers – These are important members of the hospice team who provide both assistance and companionship.
• Bereavement Support – The mourning process following a loss can be both a challenging and an enlightening time. Help is offered in this process as well as assistance with memorial services and other grieving. Continuing support is available for family and friends for 13 months afterward.
